Irvine is hosting modified Memorial Day events to allow the community to honor fallen service men and women while still maintaining health and safety guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Northwood Memorial Candle Lighting Ceremony
Community members are invited to pay their respects Saturday, May 29, 9 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sunday, May 30, noon–8 p.m. at the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial in Northwood Community Park. Visitors can light a remembrance candle and complete wall rubbings of names on the memorial. City staff will be on site to assist guests and ensure health and safety guidelines are being maintained. Northwood Community Park is located in Irvine at 4531 Bryan Avenue.

Virtual Memorial Day Ceremony
On Monday, May 31, at 10 a.m., the City will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony virtually. A prerecorded video presentation featuring a welcome by Irvine Mayor Farrah N. Khan, tributes to military fallen by commanding officers Lieutenant Colonel David Tumanjan and Sergeant Major David Caero from Irvine’s adopted 2/11 Marine Battalion, and presentations from former ceremonies will be available online. The May 31st virtual ceremony will be also available via ICTV on Cox Communications Channel 30, AT&T U-verse Channel 99, and online at the ICTV feed.

“We are honored to pay tribute to the men and women who have given their lives to protect our country,” says Irvine Mayor Farrah N. Khan. “We are grateful for their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their family members, and look forward to safely gathering the community for these somber yet special remembrance events.”
