On Thursday, June 12, Irvine was notified by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that they would be conducting targeted immigration enforcement operations at several locations throughout the city. The city has been told that these activities are focused on locating specific individuals under investigation for criminal activity who also have immigration law-related violations.

“ICE’s current operations in Irvine are not broad immigration raids, and do not appear directed at detaining individuals solely based on their immigration status,” read a statement from the city. “The Irvine Police Department is not involved in any federal immigration enforcement and remains committed to its role in protecting public safety and serving all members of the Irvine community.”

In response to this notification, Mayor Larry Agran issued a statement emphasizing Irvine's commitment to inclusivity and community support. He also emphasized that the Irvine Police Department remains committed to building trust with all members of the community. “Public safety only works when people feel safe coming forward—without fear of immigration consequences—to report crimes, seek assistance, or simply live their daily lives,” said Agran. He encouraged individuals in need of support to reach out to local nonprofit organizations and legal aid groups specializing in immigrant rights.

Irvine has also provided resources in the form of a four page PDF to assist residents in understanding their rights and accessing support services. The document includes information on constitutional rights, such as the right to remain silent and the right to refuse entry without a warrant, as well as contact information for local legal aid organizations.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and seek assistance if needed.
